Do you have a pet emergency plan?

We all know the importance of an emergency plan in a disaster, but does that plan include your pets? Check out these steps to keep your furkids safe!

Assemble an emergency pet kit

Include:
• Sturdy leashes/harnesses/carriers for transport
• Toys, beds, blankets (find ones that are easy to store)
• Food, water, bowls
• Medication, pet first aid kit
• Copies of medical records & updated photo
• If you need to board your pet, have an information sheet of feeding schedule, behaviors etc.
• Sweater or other clothing if you have an animal that is prone to cold weather

Store this kit in an easily accessible location. The car may be a great place, and it will also help in a car emergency.

Have your pet Microchipped

Consider getting your pet microchipped. Collars and ID tags can fall off or get lost. Microchipping is a small chip placed under the skin that can be scanned for the owner’s contact information in the event your pet gets lost. Make sure the information on the microchip is up to date!

Know the Details

Have a plan of who can care for your animals in an emergency or evacuation. Can they stay with you at a family or friend’s house? Know what hotels accept pets on your evacuation routes. If your emergency plan includes boarding a pet, know the rules during an emergency evacuation. If the boarding facility is also in the evacuation area, you need a plan b.

Plan & Practice

Include your pets in evacuation practice to help them get comfortable. Practice getting into carriers or the car. Practice will make it easier and cause less stress on you and your pet during an emergency.

Remember, if it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for your pet. If you are required to evacuate, do not leave your pets in your home. Be sure to have a plan in place and follow your safety plan! Preparation saves lives!
